Meet New Battalion Chief: Jordan Gustafson

We are excited to introduce our newly promoted Battalion Chief, Jordan Gustafson, whose dedication to public safety and community service has been evident throughout his career.

Gustafson was hired by the VRFA in 2011 and says he has known he wanted to be a firefighter since he was six years old. He wanted a career that was both active and would make a positive difference.

Before his fire service career, he served in the United States Coast Guard. He believes the military is the best path to the fire service, as the skills learned there, such as discipline, teamwork, and a strong sense of duty, translate directly to firefighting.

Gustafson was promoted to Captain in 2020 and has held various leadership roles throughout his career, including Truck Specialist, Public Information Officer (PIO), Ladder Captain, and Wildland Program Manager. Each of these positions has strengthened his ability to lead, work as part of a team, and manage complex situations.

As Battalion Chief, he is driven to make a lasting impact. “I want to make a positive difference in our department’s culture and internal policies,” Gustafson says. His motivation for seeking promotion centers on improving working conditions for both firefighters and captains, ensuring everyone has the support and resources they need.

Looking ahead, his priorities include enhancing the department’s wildland program to reduce community risk and expanding Community Risk Reduction initiatives. This includes conducting wildfire home assessments, participating in incident management teams, and building a robust network of subject-matter experts within the department.

Above all, he enjoys being there for the community when they need it most. “Helping someone who is having a bad day and improving their lives motivates me,” he says.

When he’s not on duty, he is a devoted husband and father of two, living on a small farm. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoys skiing, hiking, camping, and playing sports. Family is his top priority, and you will often find him on the farm, jumping on the trampoline with his kids or playing pickleball with his wife.

Please join us in congratulating Battalion Chief Gustafson and supporting him as he helps lead the VRFA into a safer, stronger future.
