Meet Newly Promoted Battalion Chief Guy Smith
Smith began his career with the VRFA in 2008. Throughout his career, Smith has been deeply involved in team and committee work, including the Truck Company program since 2009, the SKCFTC Truck Committee since 2014, and serving out of Station 31 for his entire tenure, with the exception of 10 months on day shift in Support Services. This commitment has shaped his leadership style and prepared him for the new challenges ahead.
From an early age, the fire service captured Smith’s attention. A preschool field trip to a local fire station left a lasting impression, planting the seeds for his future in the fire service.
Before joining the fire service, our Battalion Chief wore many hats, most notably as a Concert Production Manager for the House of Blues, later Live Nation. From managing the Crocodile Cafe to coordinating major festivals at the Gorge Amphitheater, these experiences taught him to thrive in fast-paced, high-pressure environments. The skills honed there, adaptability, long hours, and crisis management, translate directly to leading fire crews during large-scale incidents, where communication and problem-solving are critical.
Promoted to Captain on January 1, 2013, he spent 13 years leading the ladder truck crew before seeking the next step. The drive for new challenges and the desire to make a broader impact on the department and community fueled his ambition to become Battalion Chief.
In this new role, Smith’s top priority is supporting his captains and firefighters, ensuring that every crew is equipped and ready to serve at the highest level. His goal is to maintain top-performing fire teams who are always prepared for any challenge and never outworked.
When he’s not at the station, you can find Smith playing catch with his two sons, snowboarding, boating, hiking, or performing with his dad band, Mr. Dog.
Please join us in congratulating Battalion Chief Smith as he steps into this important leadership position. His commitment, experience, and passion for service are an inspiration to us all.
