Celebrating the Mack Award: Honoring Excellence and Camaraderie at VRFA
Each year, the Valley Regional Fire Authority (VRFA) proudly presents the Mack Award to one outstanding member, uniformed or non-uniformed, at each station. This special recognition celebrates the legacy of former VRFA Battalion Chief Bill Mack, who was known for his camaraderie, respect, kindness, inclusivity, and humor. Mack Award recipients embody these traits in their daily actions, lifting up those around them and making VRFA a better place for all.
Bill’s wife Jane joined us this year to help recognize this year’s honorees. These individuals show up, work hard, bring laughter, and leave everyone feeling respected and included, true reflections of Chief Mack’s spirit. Let’s meet the 2026 Mack Award recipients:
Station 31: Captain Jordan Gustafson
Jordan is at the heart of Station 31’s positive culture. He brings energy to every room and makes a point of connecting with everyone; there are no wallflowers when Jordan is around. A tireless worker who encourages those around him, Jordan balances his drive for excellence with empathy and understanding. He has played a key role behind the scenes, coordinating support for firefighters in need and ensuring they can return to work with confidence. Thank you, Jordan, for your hard work and commitment to your team.
Station 32: Captain Anthony Rodriguez
Captain Rodriguez is known for his unwavering dedication to others. He does it all with respect, courtesy, and a contagious sense of humor. A-Rod makes everyone feel welcome and is always eager to join his crew for any task, big or small. His leadership and camaraderie make Station 32 a better place, and he’s as much a part of the team as he is its leader.
Station 33: Firefighter Vincent “Sam” Brown
Sam Brown exemplifies pride and humility in equal measure. As a trusted professional and a humble teammate, Sam brings out the best in those around him. He is well-respected as a subject-matter expert in swiftwater rescue, instructing across Zones 1 and 3. Sam starts every shift early, ready to engage with his peers, asking about their lives and listening with genuine interest. His inclusivity and professionalism echo the best qualities of Chief Mack.
Station 34: Firefighter John Stivers
John Stivers lives by the values of the Mack Award both on and off shift. He takes pride in his work and brings positivity and enthusiasm to the job. John’s uplifting attitude inspires those around him, and he’s always ready to share his experience with newer firefighters. From organizing thoughtful projects at the station to mentoring others, John’s positive impact is felt by all who work with him.
Station 35: Facilities Technician Jon Johnson
Jon Johnson embodies generosity and teamwork at Station 35. He goes above and beyond, uniting the station through shared meals, thoughtful gestures, and genuine care for his colleagues. Jon’s humor and willingness to help make him a cornerstone of camaraderie and friendship at Station 35. His dedication and positive spirit have made a lasting mark on the VRFA family.
Station 36: Captain Aaron Martin
Aaron Martin stands out as a knowledgeable, approachable, and dependable leader. Always ready for a learning adventure, he creates a positive environment, even when faced with challenges. Aaron’s sincerity and enthusiasm make every shift enjoyable, and his commitment to growth and teamwork perfectly reflects the spirit of the Mack Award.
Station 38: Firefighter Tiffany Carlson
Tiffany Carlson is a dedicated firefighter and instructor who looks out for her fellow firefighters’ well-being. Always arriving with a smile and a positive attitude, Tiffany shares her skills generously with others, whether teaching at the pump academy or instructing new recruits at Station 38. She is a fantastic ambassador for the VRFA, active in public events and recruiting, and consistently demonstrates excellence in her work.
