Ladder 331 Honored: Captain Jordan Gustafson Receives Medal of Merit, Crew Awarded Meritorious Unit Citation for Heroic Rescue
On October 21, 2025, Captain Jordan Gustafson demonstrated courage and led decisively as Captain on Ladder 331. A routine response to an automatic fire alarm in north Auburn swiftly became a life-or-death emergency. The moment demanded training, teamwork, and resolve from everyone involved.
Captain Gustafson and his crew arrived at the scene just before 3 p.m. They saw smoke coming from the garage of a fourplex. Trusting his training, Captain Gustafson immediately upgraded the response to a residential fire. He directed his team to find the source of the smoke. After donning his SCBA and entering the cluttered garage, he saw signs of fire at a doorway from the garage into the residence. When he opened the door, he was met with dense, black smoke. This was a clear sign of a serious fire.
In these hazardous conditions, Captain Gustafson saw an unconscious adult male on the kitchen floor. He remained calm, made entry, notified dispatch, and called for his crew. Acting quickly in this immediately dangerous-to-life-or-health environment, he moved the victim to a viable exit and brought him outside. There, he coordinated resuscitation efforts with his crew and arriving units. Together, they helped the patient regain a pulse and survive transport to the hospital.
Captain Gustafson’s quick decisions and rapid actions show the best qualities of a fire officer. His ability to lead under pressure, prioritize life safety, and work with his team was key to this successful outcome.
