Battalion Chief Kevin Morehart retires after 31 years of dedicated service
Kevin Morehart began his fire service career in April 1994 with the Auburn Fire Department, now the Valley Regional Fire Authority, after working as a social worker and pawnbroker.
Initially drawn to law enforcement, Morehart found his passion volunteering in the fire service. The camaraderie, excitement, and hands-on work helped him feel at home, and he enjoyed working alongside fellow firefighters, who always made the job enjoyable.
Throughout his career, Morehart took on various roles. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, he served as a Fire Investigator Specialist, investigating the causes of fires and supporting case resolutions. His commitment to training became evident when he spent three years, from 2002 to 2005, assisting in new firefighter training. For approximately 13 years, Morehart also coordinated apprenticeship programs and managed administrative tasks as the JATC Secretary. Reflecting on his influence, Deputy Chief Steve Zehnder says, “Kevin has always been a mentor to me. His passion for training and daily improvement made a huge impact on me. Kevin defines grit. He is steady and hardworking; a salt-of-the-earth kind of guy.”
In January 2007, Morehart was promoted to Captain as the VRFA was formed. He later advanced to Battalion Chief in October 2019. His exceptional service earned him recognition as the 2001 Firefighter of the Year. He also received a Medal of Commendation for authoring and implementing the JATC Workbook.
Reflecting on his career, Morehart says, “the greatest impact we can have is on each other.” Supporting colleagues and offering guidance brought him a sense of pride. He is also known for reminding everyone about the importance of broccoli, sauerkraut, and fibrous foods.
Approaching retirement, Morehart says that he values his time in the fire service for the relationships and shared experiences it has provided. Fire Chief Brad Thompson noted, “Kevin has spent his admirable career both protecting our communities and advocating for the health and well-being of his fellow firefighters. His focus on fitness and healthy living has had a lasting impact. We will miss Kevin’s warmth and energy and wish him the best in his next adventures.”
Deputy Fire Chief Tim Day added, “Kevin lit up every room he walked into. He had boundless energy, a great sense of humor, and a can-do attitude. Above all, he’s a very kind person and an outstanding human being. I’ll miss working with him.”
Morehart leaves behind a legacy defined by his dedication to supporting others, his commitment to teamwork, and the positive influence he had on those who served with him.
Congratulations, BC Morehart! Enjoy your well-earned retirement.
