2024 Bill Mack Award
The VRFA is proud to announce the 2024 Bill Mack Award winners. These recipients demonstrate camaraderie, respect, kindness, inclusivity, humor, and a positive attitude at work.
Station 31 – Firefighter Scott McFeron
McFeron consistently brings a positive attitude and strong work ethic to his job, brightening the atmosphere with his dry humor. He inspires his teammates to work hard while keeping things enjoyable, often outperforming younger colleagues. Firefighter McFeron exemplifies the qualities of a dedicated firefighter and has an outstanding personality, uplifting his crew and consistently demonstrating the attributes deserving of the Mack award.
Station 32 – Firefighter Ben Groenhout
Ben radiates a welcoming and positive energy that instantly lifts the spirits of those around him. He has a remarkable talent for making you laugh and teaching you something new in just five minutes. His cheerful demeanor fosters a vibrant atmosphere within the station, and let’s not forget his delicious home-baked cookies, which add a delightful touch to the day, though they might inspire a few extra workouts to balance it all out!
Station 33 – Firefighter Ryan Nauer
Nauer’s infectious laughter and positive “can-do” attitude brighten everyone’s day. He is a fantastic team player who fosters a collaborative spirit that makes him beloved by all his colleagues. Nauer consistently works hard, ensuring everyone feels included in conversations and activities.
Station 34-Captain Ryan Freed
Freed excels in his role as Captain of Engine 334. He dedicates significant effort to preparing his firefighters for JATC, fostering an atmosphere where his crew genuinely enjoys working with him, much like the camaraderie that was felt with Bill Mack. Additionally, Freed serves as the Union president, tirelessly advocating for our members and ensuring they receive the support they need. His commitment to their welfare is evident in everything he does.
Station 35 – Captain Lando Alvarado
Captain Alvarado has always been a true inspiration. Those around him say they can’t recall a moment when he had anything negative to say. When you show up to work feeling grouchy and exhausted, Alvarado’s Lando’s vibrant energy has a remarkable way of lifting your spirits. Some say he is undoubtedly the best firefighter, Captain, and leader they have ever worked with.
Station 36 – Captain Aaron Martin
Captain Martin is a dedicated worker who also knows how to enjoy life. He has an excellent knack for uplifting those around him, ensuring everyone feels welcome, whether on duty or just passing through during shift changes. His coworkers look forward to seeing him; he never fails to share a funny story or an amusing anecdote that brightens the day.
Station 38 – Firefighter Lucas Butler
Firefighter Butler has been a reliable presence at Station 38, dedicated to maintaining the apparatus and the station itself. He collaborates with IT to address technical issues and commits to shift change every morning, guiding new firefighters to establish good routines. Known for his selflessness and humility, Butler contributes positively to the VRFA and Station 38. His great attitude, sense of humor, and willingness to assist others make him a valuable team member.
*This award is named in honor of Bill Mack, who dedicated many years of service to the legacy Auburn Fire Department and the VRFA. Throughout his career, he was known for his unwavering commitment to his colleagues and exemplified respect, kindness, inclusivity, and a sense of humor. Bill retired as an East Pierce Fire & Rescue deputy chief in 2023.
